What’s Your Web 2.0? (meme/survey)

Posted in Technology, Web 2.0 and Social Media by engtech on April 30, 2007

Web2.0 is all about web-based communities and services that make it easy for people to share and collaborate. There’s an old post from around a year ago by Think Vitamin where he reasons that social web apps are great and all, but casual users don’t have the time to use them. He then goes on to interview the founders of several social software startups and finds out that most of them don’t use more than five either.

Does that still hold true? I’m going to bug a bunch of people and try to find out. At the very least this should give some ideas about which apps are popular and help me discover some new ones.

What is Web 2.0?

  • Web-based software
  • You can create and modify your own data
  • Some social-networking aspects (friends list, etc)

The Rules

  1. Link to this post and the post of whoever tagged you.
  2. Create a list of the web2.0 sites you use and categorize them from “daily use” to “weekly use” to “monthly use”. Include links to your accounts if you want so people can friend you.
  3. Tag a bunch of people you want to join in.

Even if you haven’t been tagged yet, feel free to participate in the comments or to join in on the meme with your own blog.

My Web 2.0

Daily Use

  • WordPress.com multi-user blog
  • Del.icio.us for creating my linkblog
  • Google Reader for tracking other blogs

Weekly Use

  • Facebook for real life friends
  • Wikipedia for looking stuff up quickly
  • Digg for submitting/voting on sites
  • Reddit for submitting/voting on sites
  • StumbleUpon for submitting/voting on sites
  • Twitter for creating my linkblog

Monthly Use

  • LinkedIn for keep in touch with business contacts
  • Flickr for photos, and friends’ photos
  • RottenTomatoes for ranking movies
  • Amazon.com for ranking books
  • Yahoo Pipes for creating RSS feed filters
  • Tumblr for aggregating my online presence
  • MyBlogLog … admittedly I don’t do much with it anymore

I think I use way more than the average person, mostly because I’m a blogger.

Tag, You’re It!

I’m starting the list with some tech-savvy bloggers, with the hopes that it spans out to a wider demographic with time.

Man this blog tagging meme thing is getting pretty funny – I keep getting tagged which pushes off all my Gilmore Girl reviews…

But in this case I’m totally game because, I’m curious about the results of your survey, too.

@web: You’ve discovered the reason we keep tagging you — to avoid the Gimore Girl reviews! ;)

But yes, I hope this gets a turn out. I’m really interested in the results. My hypothesis is that there are a few big services, and everything else is noise.

I also think that tech bloggers will use a lot more of the services regularly compared to non-tech bloggers… more evidence of the echo chamber and that if all you do is pay attention to is tech bloggers then you’ll end up with a very skewed view of things.

I write about uninstalling ALL local applications and ONLY using online tools and “web 2.0” applications. You can read my story on http://www.myuninstalledlife.com.

It’s really amazing what they can do with online apps nowadays (we’re talking video editing, Phostohoplike apps etc) but to be honest, we’re still a few years away but many tools are really useful!

Nice discussion. Many people engaged themselves in different web 2.0 platform. These platform can be used as for both personal or business purpose.
