Greasemonkey Scripts: Friend Feed Auto-Pagerization, Resharing Links and Even More

Web Browser Tips & Tricks

It’s the last day of my week of Friend Feed and I have 5 more Greasemonkey scripts for you (for a total of 8). I think I’m done writing scripts for Friend Feed for the next little while. I might put together something for importing your Twitter contacts as friends (update: here it is) but if I wait long enough I’m sure they’ll do it as an official service.

As usual you’ll need Firefox and Greasemonkey to use these scripts.

How to Install Greasemonkey Scripts

Pagerization

First of all, let me talk about Pagerization. Pagerization is an excellent script that lets you “infinitely scroll” almost any web site. When you get to the end of the page it automatically loads the next link for you. Quoting Lifehacker:

Pagerization automatically appends the results of the “next page” button to the bottom of the web page you are currently perusing. Pagerization works on most sites (including Google, Flickr, Yahoo!, del.icio.us, YouTube) and saves a healthy amount of browsing time by automatically rendering the next results at the bottom of the current page.

Pagerization is a truly awesome thing, and if you stop reading this blog post here then you’ve already learned enough about something new that’s going to make your week.

Script #1: Friend Feed Pagerization Fixer

I updated the Pagerization cache to support Friend Feed, but unfortunately because of the way Friend Feed adds the “extra info” links they weren’t displaying! Thus was born my “Friend Feed Pagerization Fixer” script. It also fixes the “# more …” links.

I’ve updated the Twitter Client and Remove Visited Links scripts from yesterday to support pagerization.

Tip: Too Much Pagerization?

Quick tip to people using Pagerization: it can be overzealous in the sites is automatically paging for you. Use the Tools >> Greasemoney >> Manage User Scripts to exclude any sites you don’t want to pagerize.

Scripts #2 and #3: Increase Entries per Page

Friend Feed only shows 30 entires per page. That’s not very much, so I’ve put together two scripts that will increase it to 50 or 100 entires per page.

Only install one of the scripts. I find that 50 per page still works well with pagerization, but 100 per page takes too much time to load.

Install Increased Entries per Page

Pick one of these two scripts:

Script #4: Reshare Any Link

If you’ve ever used Tumblr then you’re familiar with the “reblogging” option that lets you repost something on your tumblr in one click. “Reshare Any Link” lets you share a link from Friend Feed with ANY other social bookmarking site.

  • Adds a “Reshare original link” under the ‘More’ menu of every link
  • This will reshare the *ORIGINAL* link URL and title (not a link to the Friend Feed entry!)
  • It opens the addtoany.com service in another tab with the title/url prefilled
  • “Add to Any” is a crazy little service that acts as an interface for any social bookmarking/voting site.
  • … Delicious, Digg, Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, LiveJournal …

Stays Hidden on the More Menu

Script #5: Even More Expander

Friend Feed tries to cut down on the noise by collapsing clumps of information. I find it easier to keep scrolling and scanning than to click on those “# more >>” links. Even More Expander will automatically click on the “# more >>” links for you.

What keeps me writing stuff like this if I see a lot of people using them. So help spread the word by sharing this post on Friend Feed or writing about it on your blog.

    Ah gee.

    Talk about “over-zealous” Pagerization!!!

Turns out (at least I’m 99% sure) that the Pagerization script has the behaviour in Facebook of auto-posting videos you look at in FunWall to all your friends. It’s auto-submitting a form, as far as I can tell. It thinks it’s a paging thing, but it’s not… in this case.

As a consequence I had the very embarrassing experience of posting a vulgar video to all my Facebook friends, something I would never ever do! Have I had some explaining to do there, or what!!!
