Technorati Program – Automatically Favorite Anyone Who Favorites You

Posted in IDT Labs Software Development, Technology, Technorati by engtech on April 27, 2007

What Are Technorati Favorites?

Technorati is one of the two largest blog search engines. Technorati Favorites is a way to bookmark other blogs on the Technorati site. By favoriting a blog on Technorati it shows up on your favorites list and you can limit your blog searches to only search within your favorites. It’s a good way to track blogs you only casually follow.

What is Technorati Favorite Your Fans?

This is a program that connects to the Technorati.com service, finds everyone who has favorited your blog and automatically favorites them back.

technorati favorites - people who favorited your blog - favorited by

But Why Use This?

If someone has gone to the trouble of adding you to their favorites, this program will return the favor, without requiring you to go through all of the people who have favorited you and trying to find the ones you haven’t favorited back. This is something people already do, and this program is intended to save them time by automating the process.

I saw people spending hours upon hours doing Technorati Favorite Exchanges and I thought that this would be much faster for everyone involved. So they can spend less time on exchanging favorites and more time on writing for their blog.

You can read a more detailed post of my thoughts about the Technorati favorites system here, including some suggestions for improvements.

How It Works

It only favorites a blog once. If you log into the Technorati website and delete a blog from your favorites they will not be added again. I strongly suggest checking the latest posts from your favorites and deleting any blogs that you don’t like. If any of the blogs look like spam you should report them to Technorati.

Technorat favorites - delete a favorite

It doesn’t always grab everyone who favorited you on the first try because of issues with Technorati. Even if you look at the Favorited-By list on the web you’ll see duplicates and missing names. But if you run it once a week then over time it will get everyone.

The first time you use this program it will add my blog to your list of favorites, feel free to delete it and it won’t be added again.

Fabulous idea. And generous of you to share it. You deserve being favorited for this AND the cute cat photo. Thanks!

Great idea. I’m sorry for being tech-challenged, though – so after I download this, what next? I use generic blogspot templates. Where do I put this? Thanks so much.

@manila mom: unzip the archive and run the program.

It doesn’t need to be installed on your blog, it’s just a program you run on your computer.

This is the coolest thing I’ve ever seen!

First I had around 77 favorite blogs, now I’m up to 187 and growing…

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

I’ve been searching the net for something like this for a few days now. And you created it! Yay! Hallelujah!

    Bless you!

Absolutely fabulous! When I was going through all the emails, comments and the Favorited By page on Technorati the other night I was thinking, “I wonder if there is a program available to automate this.” Thanks so much!

I’m deeply concerned that all of this Technorati Favorites exchange stuff that’s just catching on will devalue the meaning of Favorites, and make the Technorati most favorited list useless. My blog has recently been favorited by several users with 1,500 or more favorites, clearly just looking to get favorited back. I would much rather have 10 genuine favorites than 1,000 false ones. Indiscriminate reciprocal favoriting, unlike reciprocal linking does not bring significant traffic or highlight quality content- its only purpose is to game the Technorati system. I don’t fault you for creating this favorite bot- people would be doing reciprocal favoriting anyway, but it’s unfortunate that this kind of stuff is catching on.

    Thanks very much.

  16. engtech said, on April 28, 2007 at 4:30 am

@Ilya: The thing is, the Technorati Favorites doesn’t have any meaning to start with.

The top 100 favorites is a completely arbitrary ranking that Technorati should get rid of. Before these favorite exchanges came a long *very few* people used it or had even heard of it.

Creating Passionate Users, easily one of the best blogs anyone could have read only managed to hit around 190 favorites even with including a link to “add this to Technorati favorites” prominently on every page of their blog for over a year.

(edit: CPU is showing up at 593 favorites now — no idea why the number changed after such a short period of time)

All that advertisement for Technorati with what to show for it?

I like how you can use it for creating a custom blog search engine, but other than that or using it as a poor man’s RSS the feature doesn’t *do* or *mean* anything.

If it wasn’t for the attention from the favorite exchange then people *still* wouldn’t be using it.
