How to access Gmail when it is blocked at work or school

My friend Mike asked me if there was a quick way to get around the firewall that keeps him from being able to access his Gmail at work. I was surprised at how easy it is.

I don’t understand why Gmail gets blocked at work. I think it is much better that people are having their personal conversations using iluvkfed69@gmail.com instead of representing the company with every list of jokes, funny images, or comical videos they forward.

But enough of my diatribe against poor policies in the workplace. You can access Gmail using a different URL! They usually only block some of the web addresses.

#1: Use different web addresses

Instead of using http://mail.google.com use https://mail.google.com

You can also try

#2: Configure your mail program to access Gmail (through POP)

If none of those sites are available the simplest solution might be to configure your mail program (Microsoft Outlook, etc) to connect to Gmail. Instructions can be found on Google’s Help Center.

#3: Access Gmail through Google Desktop

Another alternative is to download Google Desktop on to your PC. It will bypass proxies to access Gmail. Unfortunately, Google Desktop may also be banned at some workplaces.

#4: Use a web server with Gmail Lite installed

If you’re dead set on accessing your mail from the web you can try searching an application called “Gmail Lite”. This is an application you can install on your own web site.

Of course, most people don’t have their own web site. But if you keep searching through the results you’ll find websites that have Gmail Lite installed for anyone to use.

Make sure to bookmark the site for later.

#5: Bribe the IT guys at your work

Always be on the good side of the IT guys. It makes life so much easier. They accept bribes.

  1. Food
  2. Booze
  3. Movies
    • (preferably pirated copies — although IT guy probably has a better movie collection than you)
  4. Anime
  5. Flirting
  6. Sex

On the subject of generic proxies

If you’re looking for a proxy that will let you access any blocked web page then the comments of this Digg post have a lot of suggestions.

(Credit where credit is due, that thread is where I found out about almost all of the information in this post)

One tip I really like is let Google be the proxy for you. These sites will always be accessible.

I hope you found this informative and you don’t let your web surfing interrupt your productivity too much.

    I can’t believe it. Urgh…I used to be able to access gmail at my school through https://mail.google.com without a problem; now I think they’ve figured out by now (perhaps even through websites like these) that students were accessing gmail despite their censors. grrr….now I can’t have a backup for my projects (i.e. i leave an essay at home but I have a backup copy i emailed to myself to print out at school). So yeah. No luck for me (I tried all the different URL’s…they either came up with the whole ‘this page is blocked’ jazz or they just wouldn’t load ‘cannot find server’ message.) Ugh it makes me mad !

    This one worked for me!
    Go to google.com and search for gmail. When you find the gmail link in the search results, instead of clicking on the actual link, click on “Cached”. It takes you through a different URL that makes it look like a Google search result and you can then login and view mail! :)

    @maya: I hear you. Blocking gmail is just dumb.

    Maybe getting a USB thumbdrive would be a good way to be able to keep your document portable?

    When I was in university I ran an FTP server on my home computer so that I’d always be able to transfer my work back and forth.

    I was able to access gmail once by clicking the cache on the search page as Goolister suggestion. It worked once and again i was not able to get the page. The other links given above doesnt help. can anyone suggest another way to access gmail.

    If you want to access gmail, simply use http://www.accessmygmail.com

    Enter your details, and use your account. It is slightly more simplified than the orig gmail, but works a treat.

    Currently I use gmail and aim mail. Both are good. Now they blocked both emails. I can still access to gmail using gmail lite website but I can’t access to aim mail. If anyone have any idea, please share. I try using many proxy but not success.

    You can also set up a personal Google Groups account and have your Gmail account forward any messages to it (you also have to give your gmail account permission to post to the group.) If you make the group restricted, it doesn’t appear in the groups directory. E-mails show up like threaded lists, and you can click on and read them, and even reply directly to the author of the message through Google Groups. It’s a bit of a pain when replying to all, though, as you have to forward instead of replying and rekey everyone’s e-mail address.

    There’s no way to find gmail passwords. If you try to do a brute force password hack it will lock you out.

    Another method, although somewhat convoluted and more aimed for someone on their private work computer blocked by a system such as Websense:

    1. Download the Gmail Notifier extension for Firefox
    2. Make sure all Manual Proxy settings are enabled and correct in Connection settings.
    3. Click the Notifier icon to open GMail.

    I’m not sure why it worked, probably because GMail Notifier uses one of the alternative GMail addresses to access it, but it always did. Hope this helps.

    I will have to check out the Gmail lite….I was wondering if there is anyway to direct traffic through a domain that you own with GLite…but I guess that I should check it out before I start making stuff up. Also I was wondering if the Gmail hosted email accounts are blocked. (For example, my company monomachines uses Gmail co-branded email which appears to be on different servers than Gmail. Anybody know?

    you should be able to access gmail or any site for that matter using google’s free proxy: 64.233.167.99 port 80. Open firefox, go to Tools -> Options, click on the advanced tab, network tab, settings, click the manual proxy configuration radio button, HTTP Proxy: 64.233.167.99 Port: 80 (Firefox 2.0) for older versions the connection settings tab under general.

    Often, people that live in hire educated societies have better firewalls intergratedinto their school systems. This is unfortunate for people like me. Well, sometimes computer geeks can be useful i guess? If you have a computer at home; you are almost ready to go. (note) it must have a high speed internet connection. you can go to LOGmein.com and you can register your home computer as a free computer. Then you can access you home compouter from any computer in the world that has access to the internet. This is a life saver. I have now found a way to access myspace and much much more. have a geeky day. I mean a great day.

    In china, this past summer, setting up POP access got me around the great firewall of china. Most of the summer, China was blocking all of google. Most of my consulting team uses gmail as a means to send and recieve large files. I was the only one for weeks at a time that could send and recieve anything.

    Idiots and attachments. That is why we cannot allow you to go to your email. Sure, 10% of our users might be smart enough to be bestowed the honor of email access. But the other 90% would destroy our network in less then 48 hours if we opened it up.

    @Keith: That does explain it… although Gmail is pretty good about completely blocking/scanning the file attachments that contain virii.

    Some people would argue that more infections come from Outlook/Outbreak than web-based email clients.

    But I completely see your point. If you restrict things to corporate email then you guarantee that all attachments are scanned/quarantined.

    WebSense? Well… Gmail lite will work… but I found that using the WMLBrowser firefox extension (wmlbrowser.mozdev.org/) and GMobile WAP site (gmobile.sayni.net) works fine. But probably not anymore :)

    If they block outbound SSL, there are other ways as well. Tunnel traffic through and SSH tunnel to your house.

    Never trust proxies of any kind however, as even those passing SSL can be intercepted using a dummy-cert and MITM attack. See ettercap.sourceforge.net.

    Look guys dont think that any admin worth his salary doesn’t know of these tricks and can block them quicker than you can find them.

    Why do we block g-mail, etc? Well its because all corporations have invested lots of money in protecting their systems and will have spent a considerable amount of time and effort ensuring that their corporate e-mail systems are safe from attacks and will monitor the information sent over them, blocking “joke” files, etc. To leave the back door open to an un-monitored enterence renders all the efforts useless.

    You want to send joke files or communicate with your mates then do it in your time, on your own equipment where if you do something wrong you are responsible.

    Dont blame the IT guy.. He is working under instruction and protecting the company that pays your salary…

    I have tried every proxy site, and gmail lite and everything mentioned on this site ( and ‘many, many’ others) and finnally! I reach the gmail login area! by using a ‘cached’ version of the site, i type in my email and password, it all works great… looks like i’m loggin in… and… BLAM! up in the URL bar it shows something like this: “http://mail.google.com/mail/?ui=html&zy=l&auth=DQAAAG0AAAAcswpMfZyiU_ak93_1vizcj1mbVBZM1OKmKEc4tD9z1MoRAY8Kfh0vegeFKsGL3TSdZMoWEjvyu_R1wTcbYH_l3vJEjKYtXQF5paB_EDxzdJaZFpoW4KLxKKhOVHd

    Seriously though people…they block these email sites @ work, school, etc for a reason (viruses, worms, etc)…..i have posted sites on here for gmail lite, so people can access it, BUT if it still doesnt work, you have to ask yourself, is it worth it to keep trying?? you know they log everything you do on THEIR computers. can you wait until you get home? is it that urgent?

    Don’t get me wrong, i am all for open access to mail, etc…but you do most likely work for a private compnay who can set their own rules when you are on their time, using their computers. dont risk getting fired b/c you cant wait to read your new mail!!

    Nice post! Luckily, my workplace does not block anything as of yet. However, this does make for a lot of stupid pictures, jokes, etc, coming through emails or people browsing virus-loaded websites… Anyway, if they do start blocking, my husband is our IT guy, so it may not be too hard to get around. :)

    I found a free browser proxy that lets me access myspace, and youtube….and gmail.

    I know there are a million of these sites out there, but this one is fast and clean (no scrolling pages of ads) and it handles flash, and allows downloading!

    This is so helpful. I usually send back-up copies of things to my gmail account so I can access it anywhere. At work, they have disabled all email AND all USB drivers, so I have no way of making my documents portable (unless I use floppy disks, which never hold quite enough). I’m so glad I can now use my email at work. I usually only use it for work anyway. Thanks for the help!

    For you people trying to bypass your corporate network blocks, you might want to ask your manager or IT department about your companies acceptable computer usage policy. At our company, we block alot of these proxies but realize more will just pop up, so every employee is required to sign an acceptable usage policy upon their hire. If they utilize any method for trying to bypass any of our filters or security features (and believe me, it is quite easy to see who is trying to use proxies and whatnot) they are fired on the spot. The termination is also done in such a way that they have a very difficult time collecting unemployment pay. So you might want to weigh your myspace usage against your paycheck and see which you’d prefere. A few of our employees were shocked when we came to them out of the blue with a printout of their internet usage and a pink slip, they threatened to sue and all that nonsense so we also provide them a copy of the usage policy agreement with their signature on it. If you don’t like your company policies you might want to find a job that allows you to screw around on the internet, BEFORE it effects you in a negative way.

    Also, a bit of a warning, some of these proxies will actually steal your login information, so you might want to do a little bit of research on the particular one you choose to use before you type in anything you don’t want them to know.

    Ok, a lot of people have been asking about the proxy service on http://www.legalherbalshop.com apparently, a lot of people can not access it, as it is VERY popluar now!! it will bypass every firewall….the only way you get access is buy purchasing something on their site, they will grant you access after that! and you only have to purchase one time to have lifetime access to the proxy service, i dont know how they do it, but it is updated daily in order to keep up with new firewall rules, etc….

    When you’re at home, do you use your internet connection or do you dial in to work? The problem is your web browser settings are likely set up to use your work “proxy”. Google “proxy settings” for your web browser to find out how to change them.

    then the Advanced tab

    then the Network tab (under advanced, can be hard to see)

    then the Settings button. And you want “direct connection”

    The FoxyProxy https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2464 extension can help switching proxy settings between work and home.

    OK.. here’s a slightly different problem:

    I use a Mac, my school blocks my APPLE MAIL program from getting or sending mail thru GMAIL. I don’t use other email service.

    Yes, I CAN get to the GMAIL website, but I’d RATHER be able to use my own APPLE MAIL.

    At one time I could GET incoming mail, but not send, now I cannot GET or SEND thru Apple Mail.

    Any way around that?

    Gmail’s default interface display uses active x controls. My company had restricted active x activity. When you are on a different computer with access to your gmail account, change and save the default view to the ‘HTML’ option instead of the original default view (which uses active x). This resolved all my issues using gmail at work.

    I tiried all of the methods described in this post, and most of the methods described in the comments, but none of them worked for me. (blocked, no access, etc.) .
    Finally I found http://www.zenbe.com – which seems really great rich AJAX-web2.0 mail service( Add tags to messages, auto filter by known web application which send mail often (facebook) and more).
    But most important: It wasn’t blocked, and I could access my gmail accunt through pop3.

    try using google homepage in sandbox developer mode, you can view, delete and send emails from within the i-frame of gmails new component.

    Also I-google will show you the subject heading and a little of the text, better than nothing.
