My buddy Tony has the helm of Problogger.net this week and he’s written a truly excellent post on blog marketing. Blog marketing is as much (if not more) work than blogging itself. His advice is 100% accurate based on my experience and I’ve yet to see such a concise list of “Everything you need to know about making your blog popular”.

Here’s the summary for those of you who like to try before you bu… er, read.


Get Your Own House In Order

  1. Write well, write consistently, don’t give up.
  2. Become an expert on something.
  3. Design is more important than you think.
  4. Learn about SEO.
  5. Publish full feeds.
  6. Do interviews with other bloggers.
  7. Break important stories.
  8. Have a contest.
  9. Publish original research.
  10. Put out Press Releases.
  11. Work your long tail.
  12. Answer your comments, in your comments, and off blog.
  13. Spend time to create links and trackbacks.
  14. Get Your MyBlogLog widget and work it, work it, work it.

Getting the Word Out

  1. Join a blog carnival.
  2. Join blog network.
  3. Participate in forums.
  4. Participate on larger blogs in comments.
  5. Join Blogburst.
  6. Participate in Darren’s contests.
  7. Submit to blog directories.
  8. Submit to Google sitemaps.
  9. Submit to article directories.
  10. Get interviewed.
  11. Get listed on a news aggregator, or blog aggregator.
  12. Create free stuff for yourself and give it away.
  13. Create free stuff for other people.
  14. Pay for pub.

Connect, Connect, Connect

  1. Make friends with other bloggers.
  2. Guest blog.
  3. Volunteer, intern, scut-monkey your way into a blogger’s graces.
  4. Get hired.
  5. Network in person.
  6. Join virtual groups.
  7. Cross promote.

Make Social Media Work For You

  1. Facebook.
  2. Join Helium.
  3. Yahoo Answers! .
  4. Create a Squidoo Lens.
  5. Use MySpace Marketing:.
  6. Get Dugg / Netscaped / Reddited / Stumbled upon.

    Great summary. I’ll check out the full article. I submit that it’s almost too easy to get caught up in answering posts sometimes, and that can take up a lot of one’s time that should be spent researching and writing more. However, when starting a new blog out, it certainly pays dividends.

    I think it’s a great idea for bloggers to engage their readership by holding contests and even giving out prizes if they can. We’ve gotten a few e-mails from bloggers who want to use our t-shirts as prizes, and we’re all for it since it results in positive promotion for us. It’s a win-win situation.

    I bet a lot of companies out there would be willing to sponsor a contest at a popular blog, and it would be a great way to get the lurkers to participate. You probably can’t expect Apple to give you tons of free iPods if you just have a few hundred readers, but I bet smaller companies would be glad to part with a few bucks in products if it results in positive press.

    One question about Tony’s advice: How are you supposed to use MySpace for promotion?

    For dirtymicrobe what I would do is create a MySpace profile called dirtymicrobe with lots of pictures, music, maybe videos. Then I’d put a link up on the dirtymicrobe site asking people to add us to their friends list.

    I’d also join myspace groups (but not spam them), try to get on the friendslist of celebrities that my customer base identifies with…

    doing some viral videos on youtube would also be another great way to spread the germs.

    BTW, my “You probably can’t expect Apple to give you tons of free iPods if you just have a few hundred readers…” comment was not directed at //engtech. I meant to say “ONE probably can’t expect…” I know your blog has billions of loyal fans and Apple would be lucky to sponsor your contests. ;)

    I did manage to get a free cellphone when I first started blogging though, and I’ve gotten around 9-10 free O’Reilly books. And a free xbox 360.

    And of course, a dirty microbe t-shirt. :)

    Excellent summary. What a guide! Thanks. While I have been doing mos of these, I was shocked to see where I fell behind the 8 ball and completely missed out on some of the more important ones like joining Blogburst. Thanks for lighting a fire under my butt.
